Letter writing
In an activity in class today, I had the college student hand write a letter to a classmate providing descriptive, specific, critical feedback using respectful, friendly, constructive language.
I polled folks to inquire 'how long since' they last wrote a letter. Many replied 'never'.
How very sad - to loose the art of expressing oneself in writing, as in hand writing - pen to paper or card. There is a pause in the construction of a handwritten letter - a moment that affords a breath.
While email and typed correspondence are omnipresent (especially the shorthand text), the medium conveys not the same personal connection of a handwritten letter.
I am so pleased to have dedicated in class time to the exercise.
The process allowed pause for folks to reflect on and critically analyze what they saw in the speech, to articulate their observations coherently, and to forge personal communication interactions.
A student, upon receiving a letter from a peer, smiled and expressed how wonderful it is to receive a letter.
Write on.
