Routine Establishment

Fall semester is underway - even as we experience the hottest, most humid summer weather. I began a new routine this morning. My fellow, mi espousa, departs for work before 6 am, bless him.  I tend to awaken briefly when his alarm sounds, then I wake him before I return to slumber. A short while later I am reawakened by the click of the bolt sliding into place as he locks the door.  Many a morning I am unable to slumber after the second waking.

Today I decided rather than try to sleep for a couple hours, or lie in bed half awake half asleep, I would open the curtains, make my tea and start my day.

By 7:30 I had already had my morning tea, read a few chapters in the book and was feeling ready for action. I loaded up my 'new' bike in the car and went to a trail not far from home.  I did not want to ride in the morning 'rush' traffic, groggy Monday morning drivers, or driver hyped from their expresso, 2nd coffee or dangerously caffinated jolt drink.  The recently acquired teal step through circa 1983 Diamond Back 1/2 road 1/2 mountain bike with thin wheels and a lightweight frame is much easier for me to schlepp around.  I can lift it with ease. My other 2009 Diamond Back 1/2 cruiser 1/2 mountain bike with fat tires, front springs and a heavy duty frame is too heavy for me to tote about without hurting myself.

Enough aside - I went riding and what a glorious morning. Sun just rising, sky brilliant blue, trees breathing, birds flitting and chirping.  As soon as I began coasting down the hill at the trail entry, my hair whipping in the wind, I felt an all encompassing freedom.  My wood nymph self reveled at every sensory experience.

After a few miles of riding, I stopped in a grassy strip along the trail, edged by shrubs, and stretched in yoga poses.
The experience fueled my spirit, charged my body, soothed my emotions and stimulated my mind.  A routine worth maintaining. A ritual worth repeating.

Back home now, I will spend a few hours outside with the cats (on leads).

I will write, work, knit, read as the inspiration moves me.
I am grateful for the day.  A feeling I have missed of late.
